In his controversial article “Presença ou a Contra-Revolução no Modernismo Português” [Presença or the Counter-Revolution in Portuguese Modernism] Eduardo Lourenço contrasted the two generations of Portuguese Modernism, emphasizing the “modernist” character of Orpheu and the “traditional” character of Presença and denominating the first one as “negative ontological adventure” and the other as a mere “psychological adventure”. Taking as a starting point the controversy between the two critics, I intend to investigate, through the analysis of the selected poetic works of Mário de Sá-Carneiro and José Régio (authors linked by various affinities), to what extent the differentiation between the first and the second Modernism is based on the criterion of philosophical/psychological weight and/or to what extent the dissimilarity between those two literary “movements” is due to the difference of the poetical language.
