The present work rises from a question about the use of the book Novo Avenida Brasil 1 (NAB1) as main teaching material used for teaching/learning Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) in the United States. Based on the assumption that understanding and speaking are the two most significant language skills in an interactive communication context, and having the students as the main object of interest, this study aimed the following: to verify if the exercises proposed by the book promote orality, and to point out the biggest difficulties faced by students, as to orality, when working with the book’s proposal. A case study was carried out in order to point out these objectives; the results appear to point in a positive direction regarding the book’s approach in the exploitation of orality - from the students’ view, a favorable approach to teaching/learning PFL.
