- Integrating Artificial Intelligence Tools for Effective English Teaching in Middle and Secondary SchoolsPublication . Brandão, Raquel Sofia da Silva; Neves, Marco António FrancoThe growing presence of artificial intelligence in education is changing teaching and learning practices, offering new opportunities while also presenting several challenges. This study investigates how middle and secondary school English teachers in Portugal currently perceive and use AI tools, what benefits and challenges are associated with their integration, and what support is needed to make that integration more effective and pedagogically appropriate. Although AI applications such as personalized learning platforms, automated feedback systems, and generative content creation are increasingly available, many school teachers report feeling underprepared to use them effectively. Concerns around plagiarism, professional training, institutional support and data privacy remain central to debates on AI integration. To address these issues, this research employed an embedded mixed-methods approach combining survey data from 55 middle and secondary English teachers and semi-structured interviews from 15 middle and secondary English teachers. This design combined different approaches; by integrating qualitative and quantitative elements the study offers a more detailed interpretation of results. Findings revealed concerns but also curiosity, more than 80% of the teachers who participated in the survey and interviews reported having used AI tools in their teaching practice and recognized the potential of AI to revolutionize the way we learn. They consider AI particularly useful for lesson planning and administrative efficiency yet their confidence levels are moderate to low and their enthusiasm is restrained by practical limitations and ethical uncertainties. The study contributes to a field in which educational contexts remain underrepresented, and offers practical recommendations including targeted professional training, supportive institutional policies, and small-scale classroom experimentation to build teacher confidence. The conclusions suggest that AI's educational potential can only be realised through a balanced approach that combines innovation with responsible use, positioning teachers not as passive adopters, but as active contributors to AI integration in schools. One of the most intriguing conclusions of this study is that interest in AI-related professional development is near-universal, not a single teacher in this study said “no” to further professional training.
- As traduções portuguesas de ‘The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar’, de Edgar Allan Poe.
Sofilkanych, Antonina; Bennett, KarenThis translation project focuses on the analysis and proposed Portuguese version of the work My Women, by Yuliia Iliukha. This book is a collection of short narratives documenting the experiences, trauma, and resilience of Ukrainian women during the Russian invasion. With English as a pivot language, the proposed translation operates within the framework of indirect translation, exploring the ethical and technical tensions inherent in transposing the "Other's" pain into a new linguistic context. The translation methodology adopted for this project departs from traditional domestication, favoring foreignization strategies (Venuti) and the creation of a "hybrid text" (Schäffner and Adab). Through a detailed translation commentary, the study discusses the challenges of terminological precision and the cultural weight of specific elements, demonstrating how minor linguistic details carry the burden of a nation’s identity. The project concludes that translating witness literature transcends linguistic competence, representing an act of solidarity and a commitment to collective memory, ensuring that Ukrainian singularity remains visible and audible within the Lusophone imagination.
- Enhancing English language learning through technology: a study of Duolingo users in LisbonPublication . Ba-Ana, Joy Oboharekhe; Neves, Marco António FrancoThis study investigates the effectiveness of Duolingo in enhancing English language learning among young adult professionals and university students in Lisbon. Using a quantitative approach, a survey was conducted with 60 Duolingo users aged 18-40 to examine usage patterns, perceived benefits and limitations, and the influence of demographic factors. Key findings indicate that Duolingo is perceived as highly effective for receptive skills like vocabulary, but less for productive skills like speaking. A strong positive correlation was found between consistent daily usage and perceived proficiency gains. While users praised Duolingo's userfriendly design and gamified elements, most viewed it as insufficient as a standalone learning tool. Notably, younger users (18-25) and those at the undergraduate level reported more positive perceptions of Duolingo's effectiveness compared to older, postgraduate users. The study concludes that Duolingo serves as a valuable supplementary resource for foundational English learning but should be complemented with communicative practice for comprehensive language mastery. Recommendations are provided for learners and educators to optimize Duolingo's use within a broader language learning strategy.
- The influence of L1 on second/foreign language learning: exploring strategies and motivation in the learning environmentPublication . Maia, Fabiana Santos de Lima; Martins, Margarida PereiraLearning a second language is a crucial factor in many people's personal and professional development nowadays. Portugal has been growing as a country that has attracted an international community to live, work, and study in recent years. This fact has increased the need for the teaching and learning different languages, especially English, for people with Portuguese as a first language (L1) in the interest of better job opportunities as they can work remotely or onsite for an international company, for instance. However, learning a second or foreign language is a complex process once learners are past a certain age. To better understand learners and the difficulties they experience, this research aims to explore the influence of L1 on the learning of a second language with a focus on age and the learning environment itself. Data for this research is based on my teaching experience, mostly in international schools where English is the official teaching language. On the one hand, most of the students in these schools do not have English as their L1, as they are Portuguese, Brazilian, Ukrainian, Russian, South African, or Singaporean. On the other hand, some also need to learn Portuguese, as they are American, British, South African, Ukrainian, Russian, and Singaporean. This is a huge challenge for students as they need to learn two different languages simultaneously. Along with what I have gathered from experience, this research will also address different theories on second/foreign language teaching and learning as well as explore strategies that help language learners achieve their aims. One of these strategies will be based on how technology can be used as an important tool to support language learners in their second/foreign language learning.
- God does not play dice with the universe. A Comparative Approach of Science Popularization and ReligionPublication . Kock, Sarah Lucy de; Oliveira, Isabel Maria Lourenço deWhat holds a nation together? Unlike most countries, America was founded less on ancestry than on ideological stories with its history an ongoing negotiation between myth and reality. The myths that created a sense of unity among a high variety of immigrants across a vast country are public instruments that organize experience and legitimize power. These stories divide the resources and determine the boundaries of who belongs. They create an alternative imagined history, though wounds and truths eventually resurface painfully. Ideologies in narrative form— exceptionalism, the Promised Land, Manifest Destiny, Redeemer Nation—mediate national ambition, identity, exclusion, and public trust. American science emerged as a partnership among universities, corporate research, and federal agencies and was driven by the ambition to lead the world through war, innovation, and national prestige. Big Science projects became symbols of American power and identity, with physicists cast as pioneers and laboratories transformed into cathedrals. Federal investment, philanthropic foundations, and military collaboration established an institutional infrastructure that elevated the United States from its Atlantic origins to global scientific leadership, embedding research and technological prowess at the heart of American modernity. This dissertation engages with narratives about science and religion through comparative readings of contemporary works by Leon Lederman’s and Dick Teresi’s The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question? (1993) and Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons (2000) that mobilize mythic frameworks and thus depict laboratories as cathedrals, physicists as pioneers and cowboys, and (quantum) physics turns into modern pilgrimages, blending faith, science, and the promise of perpetual progress—even as that confidence sours into institutional distrust and conspiracy myth. The dissertation traces the history of America’s faith-driven founding from Puritan covenant to manifest destiny, religious exceptionalism, and the rise of Christian nationalism. It examines the mechanisms of uniting and excluding, legitimization, public trust, conspiracy and competing narratives. Lederman, Teresi and Brown use frontier ambition, sacred language, institutional critique to legitimize or question authority. In moments of rupture, Americans hope that old-new stories might restore direction and trust—negotiating ambition, crisis, and the boundaries of faith, reason, and civic hope in a nation that insists forever on its difference and redefines itself once again.
