Teaching materials play a fundamental role in the teaching-learning process because they are essential, especially in language teaching and learning. In this present study we analyzed the manual Periquito Beta, used to teach first graders in Guinea Bissau. The purpose of this analysis was to verify the level of adequacy of this Portuguese language learning manual used in Guinea Bissau, a country with large linguistic and cultural diversity, where the language of instruction is not the mother tongue. What was verified is that the manual does not aim at teaching Portuguese as a second language. Therefore, some strategies that can function as a guideline for the use of this manual in Guinea Bissau have been suggested. This analysis points out the material's need to promote and instigate students to become active subjects in their own learning process, and also to enable the development of their communicative competences in Portuguese language.
