rocaille do
No âmbito do projeto FCT ChromAz ("O Percurso Cromático do Azulejo Português" -
parte do observador.
The present dissertation focuses on the study of two tile sets belonging to the National Azulejo Museum (MNAz): a fragmented set of 20 rocaille panels from the 18th century, and a tile panel with a mythological scene of unknown date. In the context of the project FCT ChromAz ("The Chromatic Path of the Portuguese Tile" - PTDC/HAR-HIS/1899/2020), of which I am part of the team and the MNAz is a partner, the panels were chemically and morphologically characterized by μ-EDXRF, SEM-EDS and Color- imetry in order to deepen the study of color and to contribute to the clarification of questions related to the provenance and dating of the panels. Considering the hypothesis that the panels were produced by Fábrica do Juncal, the rocaille set was also compared with a panel from the same factory. Simultaneously, the conservation and restoration intervention of one panel was carried out, following the criteria framed in the methodology and philosophy of intervention of the MNAz. This included the identification, preliminary assembly, and photographic record- ing of each panel of the rocaille set, followed by the diagnosis and restoration of one of them. During the evaluation phase of the conservation status of the panel, it was found that the main problem consisted of gaps in fragments and whole tiles, thus disturbing the reading and inter- pretation of the work by the observer. Thus, different restoration proposals were presented for the chromatic reintegration of the figurative gap area in order to improve the understanding of the panel under study. The selected option, focused on one of the proposals according to the intervention criteria of the MNAz, having carried out cold and hot restorations. The results of the analyses carried out by μ-EDXRF are within the expected range for the XVIII century, with a light brown color having stood out over the yellow, which is a mixture of Naples yellow with manganese and, as far as we know from the bibliographical survey carried out, is not identified in the literature for obtaining brown. Relatively to the analysis of the pig- ments and glaze of the mythological panel, this does not present yet any result that allows a secure dating, fitting between the expected for the XVII and XVIII centuries, but these are pre- liminary results and the study is taking place within the project; the Juncal panel presents some differences in color, but even if these differences are not significant enough to rule out the hypothesis of a common provenance, it is observed that the staining is different in both cases.
