In today's rapidly changing world, autodidacticism (self-learning) has emerged as a common approach for acquiring a second language. Learning Portuguese in China is not limited to formal classroom settings. Learners have access to various resources, such as Portuguese television channels, radio programs, podcasts, newspapers, and self-study materials available in the market. This dissertation explores and analyzes the "Diz-lá" mobile application, specifically designed for Chinese learners of Portuguese as a foreign language by the Translation Laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Macau. Firstly, drawing upon M. Knowles's (1975) model, we discuss the concept of Self-Directed Learning (SDL), examining its unique characteristics, potential, and challenges in developing communicative and structural skills. Additionally, we examine the concept of Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) based on the perspectives of Loeng (2020) and Linkous (2021), and conduct a comparative analysis between self-learning and traditional learning methods. Furthermore, we trace the historical progression of language learning technologies, from Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). It then evaluates their potential for aiding language acquisition. Furthermore, drawing from the preceding chapters, the "Diz lá" application will be analyzed, and the strengths and weaknesses identified by its users are observed. The analysis is based on an online survey completed by users, and the collected data is processed.
