This research focuses on analyzing Brazilian whiteness during the transition to democracy, by exploring its functioning mechanisms and attempting to apprehend the meanings assigned to race, as well as the distribution structures of racially marked privileges in that context. The time frame extends from 1978, when the Unified Black Movement was formed in the country, to 1988, simultaneously the year of promulgation of a new Federal Constitution and of the national commemorations around the Centenary of the Abolition of Slavery. In this period, race relations gained prominence and notoriety, expanding the political opportunities of social movements, fostering racial literacy among the population and, therefore, provoking whiteness reactions. For this study, we consulted the documents produced by the repressive state apparatus gathered in the database of the National Archives, the minutes of the National Constituent Assembly referring to the Subcommittee on Blacks, Indigenous Populations and Minorities and the Oral History Interviews of the Black Movement granted to CPDOC.
