A pandemia de COVID-19 transformou o turismo de sol e praia num cenário incerto para as épocas balneares de 2020 e 2021, tornando fundamental criar um ambiente ordenado e seguro nas praias em todo o mundo que permitisse restabelecer a economia costeira sob a nova realidade. Muitos foram os estudos que projetavam a situação do turismo balnear durante e após a pandemia e, embora ainda subsistam algumas dúvidas sobre impacto futuro da Covid-19 no uso e gestão de praias em Portugal, pretendeu-se explorar como a pandemia pode contribuir para uma diferente abordagem de gestão e ordenamento das praias em Portugal. Para perceber o impacto e as principais mudanças nas praias portuguesas, o presente estudo centrou-se em três municípios do Algarve durante o período pandémico, onde a importância do turismo balnear é significativo. Analisou-se as grandes problemáticas criadas pelas medidas restritivas e como essas mudanças foram são percecionadas pelos seus utilizadores e outros agentes, através de inquéritos aos utilizadores e entrevistas realizadas a agentes das praias. Foi assim possível constatar as diferenças comportamentais dos utilizadores das praias portuguesas durante os dois anos de pandemia, assim como entender o impacto das medidas restritivas no uso e ordenamento destas áreas. Foi ainda possível, conhecer quais os principais desafios da gestão das praias e delinear o possível futuro das praias após a passagem da pandemia.
The COVID-19 pandemic transformed sun and beach tourism into an uncertainty scenario for the 2020 and 2021 bathing seasons, and it is essential to create an orderly and safe environment regarding beaches on a global scale, that would allow the restoration of the coastal economy under the new pandemic reality. There have been many studies which have projected the situation of beach tourism during and after the pandemic and, although the future use and management of Portuguese beaches is still an uncertaininity, this study aims to explore how Covid-19 could boost different planment and management approach to beaches in Portugal. To understand the main changes in Portuguese beaches, the present study focuses on data collection in three municipalities in the Algarve during the pandemic period. By conducting surveys to beach users and interviewing beach agents, this paper analyzes major problems created by the restrictive measures provoqued by the worldwide pandemic and how these changes were perceived by its users and other agents. This paper analysis the behavior differences of beaches users in Portugal during the two years of the pandemic, as well as the impacts of restrictive measures and how these affected planning and recreational use in the studied beaches. This paper also studied the main challenges faced by beach management and the potential future of beaches.
