Aiming to contribute to gender studies, namely in the military context, this dissertation intends to understand the impact of gender socialization on women’s military career choices and career management in the Portuguese Army. In a first exploratory moment, through the application of a questionnaire survey to the portuguese population in general, it was intended, under a macro perspective, to approach the gender's symbolic-cultural plan of the military field and its laboral sectors (military branches, military hierarchical positions, military specialties, military service provision regimes). Secondly, under a micro perspective, in-depth interviews were realized with military women from the Portuguese Army, through which we discuss how gender socialization processes (particularly family and school) that they were exposed since childhood, are manifested in the understanding of the construction of their representations of gender, consequently determinant of their military career choices and military career management. The dialogue between a quantitative and a qualitative approach was crucial to the in-depth analysis of the object under study, which allowed an analysis according to an interrelational perspective between structure/action and society/individual.
