A presente dissertação pretende abordar um conjunto de questões relativos à
experiência da vida a partir d’ Os Buddenbrook de Thomas Mann, nomeadamente a
divergência do ponto de vista habitual (que Thomas Mann designa de bürgerlich) e do
ponto de vista do artista. Os Buddenbrook é não só uma obra central na história da
literatura alemã, mas, acima de tudo, um texto que lança um olhar extraordinariamente
lúcido sobre a vida, constituindo-se como o terreno ideal para a compreensão destes
problemas. O romance acompanha quatro gerações de uma família da burguesia
hanseática, confrontando-nos com diferentes possibilidades de reconhecimento da vida e
com uma série de divergências que resultam da incompatibilidade de pontos de vista. O
contraste entre as personagens realça os contornos de formas de vida que podemos
reconhecer em nós mesmos, apresentando-nos uma imagem nítida da experiência da vida,
sobre a qual nos iremos debruçar.
Com este propósito, procuraremos esclarecer: i) aquilo a que corresponde o ponto
de vista burguês (que difere da descrição do burguês alemão que ocupa Thomas Mann em
Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen); ii) em que que medida o ponto de vista burguês
corresponde ao ponto de vista habitual da vida; iii) de que forma a degradação deste ponto
de vista significa a decadência dos Buddenbrook e a emergência de uma perspetiva em
relação à vida, que parece constituir o rebento da arte (e, em particular, da música, cujas
especificidades como forma de expressão artística serão também objeto de análise).
The present work aims to address a set of problems regarding the experience of life as described in Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks, focusing in particular on the divergence between the ordinary point of view (which Thomas Mann calls bürgerlich) and the artist's point of view. While Buddenbrooks is a pivotal work in the history of German literature, it is above all a text that offers an extraordinarily lucid perspective on life. For this reason, it provides an ideal ground for examining these questions. The novel follows four generations of a Hanseatic bourgeois family, confronting the reader with different ways of recognising life and a series of tensions arising from incompatible points of view. The contrast between the characters brings into focus the contours of ways of life that we can recognise in ourselves, presenting us with a clear image of the experience of life – the subject that will be at the centre of this work. Over the course of four chapters, we aim to clarify: i) what the bürgerlich point of view is (distinct from what Thomas Mann depicts as the German Bürger in Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen); ii) to what extent the bürgerlich point of view aligns with the ordinary perspective on life; iii) how the decline of this point of view means both the decadence of the Buddenbrooks and the emergence of a perspective on life that seems to be the offspring of art – particularly music, whose specific nature will also be examined.
