O escritor Vitorino Nemésio (1901-1978) publicou apenas uma obra de teatro –
a peça em um acto Amor de Nunca Mais (1920) –, que nunca mais foi reeditada nem
sequer referida pelo autor. Tratando-se de uma obra de juventude, pouco posterior a O
Marinheiro, de Fernando Pessoa (1915), e contemporânea de Antes de começar (1919),
de Almada Negreiros, esta peça de Nemésio, que foi editada em Angra do Heroísmo, e
ali representada pela primeira vez, nada tem a ver com o que à época se ia passando no
meio cultural português, nem sequer tem a ver com a realidade açoriana que foi um dos
temas centrais de toda a obra literária do autor, consistindo mais numa peça «de
sociedade», ao gosto da burguesia local. Porém, por se tratar de uma obra de um dos
principais escritores portugueses do século XX, a sua reedição justifica-se, sendo pela
primeira vez integrada numa edição da Obra Completa de Vitorino Nemésio em curso
pela Imprensa Nacional e a Companhia das Ilhas.
The writer Vitorino Nemésio (1901-1978) only published one play – the one act play Amor de Nunca Mais (1920) – that has never been republished nor referred by the author. Being a youth work, a bit after Fernando Pessoa’s O Marinheiro (1915) and contemporary with Antes de Começar (1919) by Almada Negreiros, this Nemésio’s play, published in Angra do Heroismo and there represented on stage for the first time, has nothing in common with what was happening in the Portuguese cultural environment, or with the Azores reality which has been one of the biggest inspirations in the whole author’s literary work. This play is more of a « society » representation, for the bourgeois society entertainment. The reprinting of the oeuvre is justified by being from one of the main Portuguese authors from the 20th century, being for the first time part of an edition of the entire Nemésio’s work, « Obra Completa », by Imprensa Nacional and Companhia das Ilhas.
