No decorrer
This work aims to analyse the Brazilian documentary, Elena (Petra Costa, 2012). The film, which is starred by women and autobiographical, reveals the journey of the filmmaker, Petra, in search of her sister, Elena, who went to live in New York to fulfill her dream of becoming a movie actress. The film eventually reveals that Elena committed suicide in the United States and that Petra's search was motivated by the desire to know better her sister with whom she had a double bind relationship. In the end, she symbolically feels her sister's death for the last time and, like water, allows herself to flow in other directions, following the path of her own individuation. Based on the experiences of the two sisters, and in conjunction with the concepts proposed by Sigmund Freudās essay āMourning and Melancholiaā, the present research aims to reflect on how people can experience the process of losing a loved object. It also intends to analyze the cinematographic resources used by the filmmaker to poetically represent the affective journey she undertook in search of self-awareness and understanding of her sister. For this purpose, the constitutive elements of the film are considered in a way that possible to establish relationships between them and the personal history of Elena and Petra, through an interpretive approach. The film is thus divided into four narrative units based on the following themes: identification process, melancholia, suicide and mourning.
