The current report is an internship description and reflexive analysis of teaching practices in music education classes given to fifth and sixth grade students in a Public School located in Lisbon and Tagus Valley District, Portugal during 2018-2019 school year. This document is required to complete the master’s degree in music education (2nd cycle) of basic education and follows the Internship and Supervised Teaching Practice at “Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas”. Concerning the following topic: the development of music education at the Portuguese National Curriculum for Basic Education, the theoretical framework presents: a short historical review; a description of the Manhattanville Music Curriculum Program (MMCP); a resume of the Portuguese fifth and sixth Portuguese Music education curriculum comparing it with MMCP and presenting the influences inspired by Keith Swanwick´s work. In terms of methodology, I can´t say I followed all procedures connected with action research, however I used Kemmis & McTaggart (1992) action research model as a guideline to reflect about my teaching practice in this internship. The first empirical chapter “Observation” describes the internship environment- the school, community, classroom and students. Later originates an analysis of what I observed during the teaching practice of two music teachers. Caught my eye the way they promote a learning environment, explained different topics, manage the classroom and activities. Apart from this classroom activities I saw how the school concert was prepared and I became more aware of several roles a teacher must participate outside the classroom, specifically the class director role, where a teacher must become a mediator in the communication between parents, teachers and school board promoting student achievement and enhancing student environment. The second part of this report, “Action” focuses on the lessons tough by trainee teacher, including a description, evaluation and reflection of the lesson planned. Finally, this report describes the research project “Cantar Mais” developed by Professor João Nogueira PhD together with the master’s degree students of Music Education (2nd cycle of basic education) from the same institution. I ponder over how it brought up my awareness of educational research design.
