This dissertation aims to characterize female participation in medieval urban work, specifically in the 14th and 15th centuries. Given the lack of development of this subject in Portuguese historiography, it was opted to, initially, establish which were the trades performed by women in medieval urban centers, in order to map and contextualize the tasks performed in this area. This analysis was carried out according to the sectors of activity in which women belonged, in order to establish an overall view of women’s activities. In a second part, it was intended to understand the normative framework of the royal and council authorities regarding female work. Thus, we sought to understand the actions, objectives and practices carried out by the powers present in the Portuguese medieval cities and towns and their agents regarding women in the context of work. Finally, we sought to detail female behaviors within their jobs.
