O presente trabalho de projeto apresenta uma proposta de tradução do oitavo capítulo da
obra de divulgação científica intitulada Embracing Mind. The Common Ground of Science &
Spirituality, de B. Alan Wallace e Brian Hodel. A obra é de índole filosófica e procura refletir
acerca da relação da ciência com o budismo no que à investigação da consciência diz respeito.
Aborda, por isso, várias temáticas, desde a metafísica à física quântica e à religião, levantando,
consequentemente, problemas de tradução concernentes, sobretudo, à utilização de
conceitos específicos dessas áreas. Em primeiro lugar, apresentamos a vida e a obra dos
autores, assim como uma breve caracterização da obra. Em segundo lugar, abordamos as
características do texto de divulgação científica, assim como procuramos fundamentar a
nossa proposta de tradução segundo uma abordagem funcionalista, tendo em conta os
fatores extra e intratextuais do texto de partida. Por fim, em terceiro lugar, apresentamos a
nossa proposta de tradução, seguida de uma análise tradutória onde evidenciamos os
principais problemas verificados no texto de partida e a fundamentação para as nossas
opções tradutórias.
This project consists in a translation proposal of the eighth chapter of the popular science book Embracing Mind. The Common Ground of Science & Spirituality, by B. Alan Wallace and Brian Hodel. The book deals with multiple philosophical themes, while trying to explore the relationship of science and Buddhism, centering on the investigation of consciousness. It focuses on multiple areas, such as metaphysics, quantum physics and religion, consequently raising translation issues concerning the employment of conceptual terminology, specific to those particular areas. First, we present the biography and work of both authors, as well as a succinct characterization of the book. Secondly, we delve into the characterization of the popular science genre and base our translation proposal on a functionalist approach, considering both extratextual and intratextual factors. Thirdly, we present our translation proposal, followed by an analysis pertaining the main translation problems and the justification of our translational options.
