O geoparque Naturtejo foi o primeiro geoparque português a integrar as redes europeia e global de geoparques. O geoparque abrange seis municípios e é composto por 16 geomonumentos.
É uma área que se caracteriza por um elevado despovoamento com uma população muito envelhecida, onde as atividades que predominam são a agricultura, o pequeno comércio, e a agroindústria.
A principal vantagem de se ter criado um geoparque foi a valorização dos recursos geológicos, que na maioria eram desconhecidas e não eram privilegiados em termos turísticos e que ao pertencerem ao mesmo, favoreceram a sua conservação sustentável. É necessário que existam processos de consciencialização e, por isso, uma das grandes apostas que tem sido feita, é o do geoturismo sustentável.
Ao abordar este tema, o principal objetivo é querer perceber se o geoturismo é algo positivo para o geoparque ou se apresenta controvérsias para o mesmo. Isto é, até que ponto o geoturismo influencia a degradação, ou não, do património geológico.
Assim sendo, após ter sido feito uma caracterização da área em estudo e todas as ofertas turísticas existentes no mesmo e, de ter estudado o geoturismo de uma forma mais aprofundada, foi elaborado um inquérito à população local de forma a perceber se a mesma tem noção do que é o geoparque e daquilo que o mesmo significa para a área em estudo.
The Naturtejo geopark was the first Portuguese geopark to integrate the European and global networks of geoparks. The geopark covers 6 municipalities and consists of 16 geomonuments. It is an area characterized by high desertification with a very old population, where the predominant activities are agriculture and small commerce. The main advantage of having become a geopark was the valorization of the geological resources, which in the majority were forgotten and were not privileged. There is a need for awareness-raising. One of the great bets that has been made is sustainable geotourism. In addressing this theme, the main objective is to want to understand if geotourism is something positive for the geopark or if controversies arise for it. That is, to what extent geotourism influences the degradation or not of the geological heritage. Therefore, after an analysis was made of all the characteristics of the study area and of all the tourist offerings in the area and of having studied the geotourism in a more depth form, a survey was elaborated among the local population. In this way, it was possible to understand what is actually the influence of geotourism in the geological heritage of the Naturtejo geopark.
