A Casa Forte alentejana na transição da Época Medieval para a Época Moderna

A casa forte, como símbolo de apropriação territorial, constitui uma importante ferramenta no estudo das relações de poder da Nobreza medieval portuguesa. A sua principal zona de incidência é o Norte senhorial; contudo, no final da Idade Média, encontramos casas fortes na região alentejana que constituem testemunhos monumentais da presença nobre nos séculos XV e XVI. Nesta dissertação, apresentamos uma caracterização da casa forte portuguesa e a sua evolução nos territórios meridionais através da análise de alguns exemplares existentes nos atuais concelhos de Évora, Montemor-o-Novo, Mora, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Monforte, Vila Viçosa e Portalegre, para, finalmente, traçar o perfil da casa forte alentejana de acordo com o seu contexto histórico e especificidades arquitetónicas atestadoras de uma nova mensagem de prestígio. Este trabalho representa um registo historiográfico do estudo da casa forte alentejana e procura evidenciar o seu potencial enquanto símbolo da aristocracia durante a transição para a Época Moderna. The fortified house, as symbol of land ownership, is an important tool in the study of the power relations in the Portuguese Medieval Nobility. The region where it most occurs is the seignorial North; however, in the end of the Middle Ages, it is possible to find fortified houses in the Alentejo region that constitute monumental witnesses of the centralism of the king’s power in the 15th and 16th centuries. In this thesis, we present a characterization of the Portuguese fortified house and its evolution in the Southern lands as result of the analysis of some cases in the areas of Évora, Montemor-o-Novo, Mora, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Monforte, Vila Viçosa e Portalegre, with the aim of building the profile of the Alentejo fortified house according to its historical context and arquitectural peculiarities capable of showing a new message of wealth. This work is a historiographic representation of the study of the fortified house in Alentejo and seeks to display its potential as symbol of the aristocracy during the transition to the Modern Age.
