Claude Brown, Sag Harbor de Colson Whitehead e Brown Girl, Brownstones de Paule
Marshall como exemplos de Bildungsroman, esta dissertação visa enfatizar a fluidez
deste gƩnero comparando o Bildungsroman tradicional com o Bildungsroman Ʃtnico e
demonstrar como esses romances desafiam o gƩnero do Bildungsroman tradicional
reformulando as suas caracterĆsticas. Ao analisar os percursos de personagem Afro
Americanos, este trabalho propƵe uma leitura diversificada dos aspetos sociais e
culturais do Bildungsroman. Esta leitura considerarÔ a construção da identidade de
jovens Afro Americanos nos romances selecionados, nomeadamente Sonny, Benji e
Selina, interrogando os vƔrios factores culturais que pautuam os seus processos de
maturação.
Through a close reading of Claude Brownās Manchild in The Promised Land, Colson Whiteheadās Sag Harbor and Paule Marshallās Brown Girl, Brownstones as examples of Bildungsroman, this dissertation aims to emphasize the fluidity of the genre by comparing the traditional Bildungsromand with the Ethnic Bildungsroman, and see how these novels challenge the traditional Bildungsroman genre by reformulating its characteristics. By analyzing characters of ethnic heritage, this work proposes a diverse reading of the social and cultural aspects of the Bildungsroman. This reading will consider the construction of identity of the children in the novels, namely Sonny, Benji and Selina, as well as interrogating the various cultural aspects that influence their development.
