  • RESONANCES Report - Intercultural resonances among music teachers
Publication . Sarrouy, Alix Didier; Peres, Maria; Castro, Ricardo; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH)
The RESONANCES project is an in-depth exploration of the impact of international educational exchanges on music teaching and practice. It seeks to better understand the effects of encounters between young musicians/teachers from different cultures, in other words, the role of sharing experiences and information between young multicultural musicians on their musical practice and their own teaching methods. Some very high-level music teaching institutions organise annual meetings between young musicians belonging to other renowned institutions and coming from a wide variety of backgrounds. The concrete impact of these exchanges, both personal and collective, should be studied, including the various parties involved (i.e. students, teachers, institutions). To accomplish this, we will carry out two case studies: (1) exchanges between the Haute École de Musique de Genève (HEM) and NEOJIBA in Salvador de Bahia. For a decade now, students from the HEM have been going to NEOJIBA for an intensive one-month course, followed six months later by a similar course for NEOJIBA students at the HEM; (2) the international programme Academy for Impact Through Music (AIM), which focuses on training young music teachers from all continents to enhance their ability to contribute to the personal and collective development of students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. The project RESONANCES draws on a team of experts in music education and methods from the social sciences, in particular ethnomusicology and sociology. The results of this research project will have significant implications for music teaching and for understanding the role of cultural diversity in the potential development of motivating and inclusive pedagogies.
  • Additive bio-manufacturing
Publication . Ferrari, Arianna; Moniz, António; Baumann, Martina; Coenen, Christopher; Hennen, Leonhard; Torgersen, Helge; van Bodegom, Lisa; van der Meulen, Barend; Riisgaard, Karen; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); DCSA - Departamento de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
Additive bio-manufacturing (bio-AM) is defined here as the use of 3D printing for medical purposes or non-therapeutic “human enhancement”, whether they involve the production of biological material or not. It includes any application for rehabilitating, supporting or augmenting biological functionality. The impacts of bio-AM are uncertain, and it is not clear which actions may be required to foster responsible development of the technology. This study responds to these gaps in our knowledge by describing the state of the art and future development prospects, analysing their wide-ranging impacts - including social, ethical and economic aspects - and identifying key policy challenges along with options to respond to them. Key challenges are to avoid an incoherent, piecemeal adaptation of regulatory frameworks, to support responsible development that improves citizens’ lives, and to foster public participation and citizen-driven innovation. The European RRI approach could provide a useful platform for responding to these challenges, emphasising inclusiveness and co-creation by a wide variety of stakeholder groups, including public participation.

Publication .

Publication . Sarrouy, Alix Didier; Instituto de Etnomusicologia - Centro de Estudos em Música e Dança (INET-MD - NOVA FCSH); Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH)
This is a report about the El Sistema Greece, a non-profit organization based in Athens, Greece, that supports children, specifically young asylum seekers, refugees and migrants, using music education as their main tool. This report documents the results obtained from a month-and-a half-long ethnographic study held on site, which was led by Alix Didier Sarrouy, principal investigator of the research project ‘YouSound - Music education as an inclusive tool for underage refugees in Europe’ (2022–2023). The social science research project is based at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Music & Dance, Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Lisbon Nova University. This project is financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (grant agreement EXPL/SOC-SOC/0504/2021), guaranteeing research independence and no conflict of interest. GDPR and ethical research concerns have been approved by the Data Protection Office of the University. For further information, please visit the research project website: www.yousound.eu El Sistema Greece has been welcoming, caring for and teaching young asylum seekers, refugees, migrants and Greek youths by providing music education since 2016. As this report makes clear, the educational context is demanding, particularly with regard to social skills, pedagogical knowledge, emotion management and resilience. We find this to be true for all participants involved, including students, teachers, parents and caretakers, volunteers, directors, institutional partners and financers. ESG has proved its effectiveness, adaptability and resilience over the years. It is a dynamic organisation, capable of weathering instability and challenges, including: the changes in the macro management of asylum seekers at a national and European level; the fluctuations of the political and economic contexts in Greece; and the COVID pandemic. Actions and results are also impacted by the fact that Greece is perceived by most asylum seekers as a country of passage, not somewhere to build a future. ESG has been in the avant-garde of music teaching in refugee camps and in online classes during the pandemic.  We hope this report is inclusive, accessible and useful to all social actors interested in comprehensive art education programmes, from policy-makers to teachers and students. Our objective is to present the collected data straightforwardly and effectively, and to ensure that it is accessible to a broad readership. We hope that it elicits curiosity, awareness and critical thinking, and that every reader further develops the ideas presented in thought and action. In parallel with this information report, the YouSound research team is engaging in a deeper analysis which will be the backbone for future scientific outputs.
