O outro lado de mim: o peso da orientação sexual no envelhecimento LGBT

Portugal tem apresentado um aumento da população envelhecida, levando a que esta faixa etária tenha vindo a ser alvo de diversas implementações de medidas e políticas, motivadas pela preocupação pública que tem surgido em torno da temática do envelhecimento. Aqui, destacamos especificamente os seniores LGBT e as necessidades, medos ou desafios que estes têm vindo a apresentar ou a enfrentar.
À medida que vão envelhecendo, com o medo de se tornarem alvo de discriminação ou perseguição, muitos destes elementos chegam a uma fase da sua vida em que sentem que têm de renunciar à sua orientação sexual, “voltando para o armário”, para viverem sem medo das consequências da exposição da sua sexualidade. O objetivo da presente investigação consiste, então, em adentrarmos sobre o que significa envelhecer como uma pessoa LGBT, bem como tentar compreender que lacunas é que ainda permanecem no conhecimento sobre o envelhecimento LGBT.
Assim, este estudo incide sobre as histórias de vida de indivíduos com sessenta e mais anos (> +60), homens e mulheres, que apresentam uma orientação sexual não heterossexual, residentes tanto no seu domicílio, como em instituições. Este não é um estudo representativo ao nível estatístico, sendo que quisemos propor-nos a chegar a tantos indivíduos que pudessem representar tanta diversidade de casos quanto possível (no presente caso, nove entrevistados), para aprofundarmos esta temática. Para o efeito, realizámos, então, entrevistas com foco nas histórias de vida de alguns seniores LGBT, a fim de obter os dados pretendidos para o estudo.
Desta fase, foi possível observar que estes carecem de apoio ao nível institucional e residencial, de uma entidade ou políticas que vão ao encontro das suas necessidades, como uma residência ou instituição (no caso da uma institucionalização), que aceite seniores LGBT sem que estes tenham medo de ser discriminados, ou que tenham de renunciar à sua sexualidade e/ou orientação sexual para que possam viver a sua velhice de uma forma mais plena e sem temor.
Portugal has shown an increase in the aging population, leading to the fact that this age group has been the target of various implementations of measures and policies, motivated by the public concern that has arisen around the theme of aging. Here, we specifically highlight the LGBT seniors and the needs, fears or challenges they have been presenting or facing. As they grow older, with the fear of being discriminated against or persecuted, many of these elements reach a stage in their life where they feel they have to renounce their sexual orientation, "going back to the closet", to live without fear of the consequences of exposing their sexuality. The purpose of the present research is then to delve into what it means to grow old as an LGBT person as well as try to understand which gaps is still lingering in the knowledge about LGBT aging. Thus, this study focuses on the life histories of individuals aged equal and over sixty (> +60), men and women, who have a non-heterosexual sexual orientation, living both in their homes and in institutions. This is not a representative study at the statistical level, being that we wanted to propose to reach as many individuals that could represent as many different cases as possible (in this case, nine interviewees), to deepen this theme. To that end, we conducted interviews focusing on the life histories of some LGBT seniors, in order to obtain the data intended for the study. From this phase, it was possible to observe that they lack institutional and residential support of an entity or policies that meet the needs they present, such as a residence or institution (in the case of an institutionalization) that accepts LGBT seniors without that they are afraid of being discriminated against, afraid, or that they have to renounce their sexuality and / or sexual orientation so that they can live their old age with plenitude and without fear.
