The following research is part of the master’s degree in Educational Sciences, at NOVA University - Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Lisbon. The overall goal of the present work is to find out the main purposes of Education, based on the vision of three eminent authors: Jacques Delors, Paulo Freire and Gert Biesta. From this perspective, this work is intended to demonstrate how these purposes are conveyed in Brazil and in Portugal with reference to their educational systems. It results from a thorough Literature review, and from the critical analysis of several official documents related to the educational legislation and the curricular programmes of Basic Education (1st to 3rd cycles) of those countries. Firstly, it was necessary to understand and study the concepts of purpose and education in the authors’ view as well as to find a balance between the different approaches. Then, official documents were critically analysed by making comparisons and by drawing parallels. In consequence of this, it was thus possible to discuss whether the purposes of Education are confirmed in official documents or not and to assert the strong influence of Unesco’s Report coordinated by Delors.
