Com este estudo pretende-se contribuir de um ponto de vista arqueológico, para
o conhecimento dos aquedutos da ilha de São Miguel no arquipélago dos Açores.
Apresentam-se os elementos identificados em acompanhamento arqueológico de obra e
em prospecção arqueológica, segundo um levantamento exaustivo e uma análise dos
dados obtidos tanto no campo como através de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental. Os
resultados do trabalho de campo são neste trabalho representados pelo levantamento
fotográfico, topográfico, pelas medições e informação oral que a par com os dados
bibliográficos e documentais possibilitaram uma análise e reconstrução histórica,
arqueológica, etnográfica, arquitectónica e geográfica. Partindo de um contexto geral
em que se insere o arquipélago para a visão particular da ilha em questão quantificaramse
e qualificaram-se os aquedutos. Reflectiu-se acerca da dificuldade na sensibilização
do património, das características dos elementos como as suas datações, os objectivos
das construções e ainda a sua importância no desenvolvimento económico de São
Miguel, à luz de um contexto muito próprio que se apresenta com uma história
relativamente recente e insular.
This study intends to be a contribution, from an archaeological perspective, to the knowledge of São Miguel island aqueduct, in the Azores archipelago. The elements identified in archaeological monitoring of the construction and in archaeology prospection are layed out according to an exhaustive gathering and an analysis of the acquired data on the field and through bibliography and documental research. The field work outcome is here represented by photografic and topographic gathering, measuring and oral information, side by side with bibliographic and documental data which rendered the analysis and historic, archaeologic, ethnographic, architectonic and geographical reconstruction possible. The aqueducts were qualified, starting from the general background of the archipelago, up to the particular vision of the island here in question. Finally, the hardship of sensitizing for heritage, characteristics of the element, such as its dating, the construction goals and lastly its importance in the economical development of São Miguel, are thought upon in relation to the extremely specific context carrying a relatively recent and insular history.
