Uma relevante autora norte-americana do século XX, Mary McCarthy (1912-1989) criou laços com Portugal, viajando e reflectindo sobre o país. A presente dissertação tem como objectivo primordial compreender a relação desta autora com Portugal através da sua obra traduzida e não traduzida. Visa-se tentar perceber até que ponto se terá verificado um fenómeno de não-tradução e tipificá-lo, bem como se as obras traduzidas tiveram alguma influência na condição da mulher portuguesa e, ainda, se foram alvo de (auto)censura, nomeadamente em termos de género. Com este trabalho espera-se vir a comprovar as inter-relações existentes entre áreas distintas (como a Censura e os Estudos de Género), no âmbito dos Estudos de Tradução. Finalmente, deseja-se que esta dissertação possa levantar o maior número de questões possível, alargando o campo de pesquisa em Estudos de Tradução, uma vasta área de trabalho, onde ainda há muito por desbravar.
Mary McCarthy (1912-1989), a relevant North-American author of the twentieth century, made connections with Portugal, travelling and reflecting on the country. This dissertation aims primarily to understand the relationship between this author and Portugal, through her translated and non-translated work. I will attempt to understand up to what point one can identify and define a phenomenon of non-translation, as well as whether the translated works had any influence on Portuguese women´s condition and, also, whether they were targets of (self-)censorship, namely, in terms of gender. With this paper, I hope to establish an existing inter-relationship between distinct areas (such as Censorship and Gender Studies), within the context of Translation Studies. Finally, I hope this dissertation can raise a wide number of questions, widening the field of research in Translation Studies, a vast topic, which still has much to be explored.
