This dissertation analyzes, from a philological perspective, the presence of classical themes in the ballads of the Portuguese modern oral tradition. Initially, it presents a brief and exemplary expositionof the introduction of Greco-Latin material in the epic-lyrical genre of medieval origins and the persistence of classical ballads in the modern pan-Hispanic oral tradition. Next, it focuses on examining the Portuguese tradition. It devotes attention to the ancient testimonies (centuries XV to XVII), after which it focuses on the versions of the modern oral tradition. It ends by reflecting on the persistence and reinvention, in this pan-Hispanic sub-tradition, of the classical theme elements that were introduced in the ballads by learned poets.
