A cidade da Ribeira Grande, localizada no coração do Império português, passou por um processo de internacionalização no século XVI. Este pequeno porto cabo-verdiano estava localizado no cruzamento das mais importantes rotas marítimas e comerciais e, por consequência, tornou-se num ponto de abastecimento para as tripulações estrangeiras e num ponto de passagem para várias pessoas e mercadorias.
Por um século, a cidade da Ribeira Grande foi habitada e visitada por pessoas vindas de vários continentes. Os próprios moradores deste porto cabo-verdiano experimentaram os sabores do mundo e adaptaram várias práticas e conhecimentos. Esta dissertação analisa tanto as circunstancias internacionais como o aspecto cosmopolita da Ribeira Grande Quinhentista.
The city of Ribeira Grande, located in the heart of the Portuguese Empire, passed through the process of the internationalization in the sixteenth century. This small Cape Verdean port was located at the crossroads of the most important maritime and trade routes and consequently became the supply point for the foreign crews and the transit point for various people and goods. For one century, the city of Ribeira Grande was inhabited and visited by people coming from various continents. The residents of this Cape Verdean port experienced the flavors of the world and adapted various practices and knowledges. This thesis analyzes both the international circumstances and the cosmopolitan aspect of the city of Ribeira Grande in the 16th century.
