Após a Guerra Fria e sobretudo nos últimos anos, o enfoque estratégico norte-americano tem-se vindo, gradualmente, a desviar do Atlântico e a intensificar-se na região da Ásia-Pacífico, em grande medida devido ao rápido crescimento económico da RPC, de países emergentes, e da crescente importância geoestratégica e geopolítica que esta região tem vindo a assumir sobretudo a partir da década de 1990.
Dado que uma grande parte do comércio mundial passa por esta região, o Estreito de Taiwan, tem-se revelado, para ambas as potências, um espaço vital para o controlo estratégico, político e militar da região Ásia-Pacífico e como tal um assunto delicado, que coloca ambos os Estados num clima de competição e confronto.
After the cold war and mainly in the last years, North American strategic approach has been gradually sidestepped from the Atlantic and, therefore, enhanced in Asia Pacific region. This is due to the accelerated economic growth of both PRC and emerging countries and also to the growing of the geostrategic and geopolitics value which this region has been assuming first and foremost since the decade of 1990. As a big chunk of the world’s trade takes place in this region, Taiwan Straits has become a crucial position towards strategic, political and military control of Asia Pacific region for world powers. This delicate matter places both states in a competitive and confront climate.
