This report focuses on the importance of sociocultural aspects in foreign language teaching and is strongly influenced by the author's belief that teaching a foreign language implies teaching its native culture(s), since languages are part of a cultural frame and only by exploring both language and culture will the learner discover the realities beyond stereotypes and be able to communicate effectively with native speakers. Therefore, this report starts out by looking into the theoretical background that supports this idea, giving then way to the description of a few activities which were designed to approach foreign language education in a culturally meaningful context and carried out in and out of the classroom with students from different age groups, grades and language levels. The activities for the Spanish class were created and implemented during the 2013 / 2014 school year, when the author was a trainee teacher of Spanish as a Foreign Language to secondary school students in Augusto Cabrita Secondary School, Barreiro. The activities for the English class are based on her work as a secondary school teacher of English as a Foreign Language in the same school year. They give rise to a final reflection on the applicability of the initial theoretical principles, in the light of the authorâs teaching experience.
