This paper consists in a qualitative and bibliometric analysis of the private library (selected in the area of Education) of the inspector-orientator José Baptista Martins, composed by 565 titles published between 1909 e 1996 that fill the documental spoil compiled by the Secretaria-Geral da Educação e Ciência (SGEC). This study looks into the main topics of the contribution that a bibliometric analysis can bring to the evaluation and knowledge of a private library and on the profile of the reader who founded it through its formal analysis, the identification of the areas of the knowledge and pedagogical currents which interested him the most in the context of Education and the evidence of professional relationships established with his peers left in his documents. By these means, aware of the bibliometric handling of the data derived from his own collection and its comparison with the quantitative aspects of other studies from Portuguese private libraries similar to the José Baptista Martins library (BibJBM), an interview was conducted to the daughter of José Baptista Martins (JBM). This analysis revealed a library characterized by the diversity of the documental typologies, in its places of editing and languages of release – which exhibits a grand opening to the exterior -, as such as authors and topics of the domain of education; a devoted reader is perceived to action and pedagogical practice, which favours the introduction to practices and methodologies innovative to teaching.
