This report intends to highlight the relevance of using the teaching methodology of Cooperative Learning (CL) which, despite the fact of not being the solution for all educational problems, can contribute more effectively than the traditional approach, individualistic and competitive, to the enhancement of the diversity in schools and to the achievement of objectives. Accordingly, we tried to discuss the positive effects of implementing and exploring CL in mother tongue and foreign language classes, in Junior and High School of Basic Education, respectively, with the aim of developing students’ social and academic competences. For the reason of being a language teaching course, we specifically focused on their writing skills. In our attempt to do so, we began by framing CL theoretically while trying to support our position, favourable to its use; then, we characterized the school context in which our pedagogic intervention took place and contextualised the classes given, justifying the options taken and reflecting on its most or least positive aspects. Eventually, we concluded with some considerations about the reception of CL by the students and their evolution working with such methodology, with their learning of programmatic contents and with the data collected by the teacher throughout the classes
