Football, more than just a sport, is a cultural phenomenon that moves masses. I filmed several Varzim Sport Club games, in Póvoa de Varzim, and pretend, through observational documentary, look at football as more than a simple form of entertainment, but instead as space of recreation and belonging where people, by giving up their personal space, gain a freedom provided by the fan mass – an organic being made of bodies whose diverse wills converge in pure equality – and enhanced by the game in which they willingly participate. I will argue that the emotional expression of the crowd in the stadium keeps the collective memory of their ancestors, which constitutes their identity, alive, seeing in the act of remembrance a performative quality. Cinema can, through the evocative potential of montage, confront the double paradox of memory – in its simultaneously invisible and visual dimensions – and defend those who are filmed. Allowing myself to be rocked by the Póvoa sea, I attempt to see the game through the 12th player.
