O principal propósito do trabalho que se segue, em vista do qual toda a sua estrutura foi erigida,
foi dar a Unordnung und frühes Leid (1925), uma novela pouco conhecida que o autor alemão
Thomas Mann (1875-1955) escreveu logo a seguir a A Montanha Mágica (1924), uma tradução
integral para língua portuguesa. Servi-la-iam paratextos que ajudariam a aprofundar a relação de
quem a lesse com o texto: uma introdução que não se ficaria pelo simples contexto histórico,
biográfico e literário, aduzindo-lhe exploração temática e um certo questionamento; notas ao
texto para desambiguação ou elucidação de termos, expressões e passagens; e a tradução de uma
ainda menos conhecida nota sobre o texto escrita pelo próprio autor. Da tradução integral e dos
três paratextos descritos se faria uma proposta de livro.
Colocado o livro no centro do trabalho, de um dos seus lados estariam as suas raízes e do outro os
seus frutos. Enquanto por raízes se entenderia uma parte introdutória onde se exporia a
fundamentação subjectiva e objectiva do intento, assim como questões primeiras e o decorrer do
trabalho até chegar ao livro, por frutos entender-se-ia a reflexão – tradutológica, linguística,
literária e pessoal – possível apenas depois de feito o livro. Assim, retomando o tom da primeira
das três partes do trabalho, se viria dar a um fim
The following work’s main purpose, in consideration of which its whole structure was built, was to give Unordnung und frühes Leid (1925), a lesser-known novella written by the German author Thomas Mann (1875-1955) just after The Magic Mountain (1924), an unabridged Portuguese translation. It would be served by paratexts which would help deepen the reader’s relationship with the text: an introduction that would not be limited to historical, biographical and literary context, also venturing into thematic exploration and some questioning; endnotes that would disambiguate and clarify terms, expressions and excerpts; and the translation of an even less wellknown note on the novella, written by the author himself. The unabridged translation and the three paratexts just described would form a book proposal. With the book placed at the centre of the project, to one of its sides would be its roots, to the other its fruits. Whereas by roots an introductory part would be meant, where the subjective and objective reasoning behind the whole intent would be explained, along with some first questions and a description of work on the book’s conception, by fruits a reflection would be meant – not just a matter of translation, but also of linguistics, literature and personal experience – that would be possible only after the book’s conception. Thus, taking up the tone of the work’s first of three parts, an end would be reached.
