Since the dawn of journalism it has included, among other dimensions, commentary, fundamentally through opinion. Over the years, the specialisation of journalism and the online revolution, with the emergence of new possibilities combined with the changing landscape of newspapers and the adaptation of radio and television, have brought new challenges to this logic and today we are facing an era of commentary. The spread of commentary in journalistic spaces also applies to sports, particularly in relation to football, by far the sport with the most airtime in Portugal. In this context, this study aims to examine the link between journalism and sports commentary in television, radio and podcast programmes in the Portuguese media. In order to understand whether there are bridges between commentary and journalism and whether the former can be not only a product, but also a way of valorising the latter, a qualitative methodology was adopted. Semi-structured interviews with 15 commentators, including both journalists and non-journalists, made it possible to explore this dimension in addition to public perception of various sports commentary programmes in Portugal. Also evident was the birth and growth of a new wave of programmes in Portugal. Although there is still no prime-time slot on the main generalist channels, there is more and more room for the emergence of programmes aimed at talking about football in a more tactical and game-focused way, creating communities of people interested in this topic around them. Even so, there is a consensus that a more generalised change in the paradigm of Portuguese communication and sports culture is still a long way off.
