Journalism and democracy mutually influence each other. The first is one of the main pillars of democratic systems, whereas the second ensures better conditions for the media, which reflect on its proper operation. Between these two concepts, in the Portuguese case, one can situate the Carnation Revolution, which allowed the foundation of a democratic regime and the creation of better conditions for the practice of journalism. It also had its media representation, both at the time, in 1974, and on its anniversaries. The aim of this report is to study the journalistic coverage of the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, which took place in 2024, specifically by the newspaper PÚBLICO, precisely as a practical example of the link between journalism and democracy. A mixed methodology was used in this study, including an analysis of 81 articles displayed on the page “50 years of April 25” available on the paper’s website, as well as interviews with four journalists with particularly important roles on the production, edition or coordination of the same contents. To better understand the strategy of the journalistic coverage of the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, the main angles, subjects and formats were emphasized, along with the approaches attributed to the concepts of journalism and democracy. It was, therefore, possible to conclude that social and historical angles were predominant, with subjects such as women’s rights, democracy and episodes from the Revolution’s history. Almost half of the articles that were analyzed were reports, but chronicles and interviews also had a significant representation. Although journalism itself wasn’t a recurring topic, democracy was, being portrayed from multiple angles, according to various perspectives that defend its appreciation and investment.
