As intervenções de conservação in loco têm vindo a ganhar popularidade na área da
Conservação, abordando uma necessidade de transparência em relação à conservação do património cultural e um desejo de envolvimento do público. Estas iniciativas podem contribuir para a educação do público em geral em relação aos princípios e ética desta área, assim como fomentar uma maior conexão com a coleção das instituições museológicas que acolhem as intervenções. Realçando o trabalho desta profissão, a conservação
in loco contribui ainda para
a valorização dos conservadores perante o público, museus e legisladores.
Durante 2023/24 foi realizada uma iniciativa de conservação
in loco no Museu Munici-
pal Carlos Reis, direcionada para o restauro da coleção de pintura de Carlos Reis. Uma inter-
venção realizada diante os visitantes é acompanhada de uma variedade de dificuldades, parti-
cularmente na comunicação eficaz com o público. Apesar da maior parte dos indivíduos se
mostrar interessado, é necessário estabelecer um equilíbrio entre aspetos técnicos e teóricos
e questões mais práticas para manter a conversa acessível. As imagens do "antes e depois"
podem ser úteis aqui para mostrar o verdadeiro impacto da intervenção nas obras e captar a
atenção do visitante. Relativamente ao decorrer do trabalho, a entrada frequente de visitas na
sala contribui, no entanto, para a interrupção ao progresso do restauro. Como trabalhadores
externos, a logística apresenta ainda um desafio adicional, podendo ser mais desafiante do
que lidar com os visitantes, uma vez que pode interferir de forma mais direta com o trabalho.
O planeamento semanal das atividades a ser realizadas na semana seguinte torna-se, portanto,
essencial para evitar atrasos.
Esta intervenção foi caracterizada por um trabalho híbrido, uma vez que as pinturas de
maiores dimensões foram restauradas no museu, enquanto as menores foram transportadas
para o atelier em Lisboa. Este modo de trabalho foi útil para o restauro das obras maiores dado o espaço amplo do museu, embora tenha exigido algumas alternativas em algumas fases da
intervenção. O transporte de pinturas para o atelier permitiu, por outro lado, realizar certos
procedimentos mais facilmente, como fixações, por exemplo, assim como obter a assistência
do resto da equipa para a conclusão célere da campanha de restauro.
In situ conservation interventions have been gaining popularity in the field of Conservation, addressing a need for transparency regarding the preservation of cultural heritage and a desire for public engagement. These initiatives can contribute towards educating the general public about the principles and ethics of this field, as well as fostering a stronger connection with the collections of the cultural institutions that host the interventions. By highlighting the work of this profession, in situ conservation also helps to raise the profile of conservators in the eyes of the public, museums, and legislators. During 2023/24, an in loco conservation initiative was carried out at the Museu Municipal Carlos Reis, focusing on the restoration of the Carlos Reis painting collection. An intervention conducted in front of visitors is accompanied by a variety of challenges, particularly in the effective communication with the public. Although most individuals show interest, it is necessary to strike a balance between technical and theoretical aspects and more practical issues in order to keep the conversation accessible. "Before and after" images can be useful here to demonstrate the true impact of the intervention on the artworks and to capture the visitors’ attention. However, in terms of the progress of the work, the frequent entrance of visitors into the room does contribute to interruptions in the restoration process. As external workers, logistics presents an additional challenge, which can often be more difficult to manage than interacting with visitors, as it can more directly interfere with the work. The weekly planning of activities for the following week thus becomes essential to avoid delays. This intervention was characterised by a hybrid approach, as the larger paintings were restored in the museum, while the smaller ones were transported to the studio in Lisbon. This compromise was useful for the restoration of the larger pieces, given the museum’s ample space, although it required some alternative approaches in certain phases of the intervention. On the other hand, transporting paintings to the studio made it easier to carry out certain procedures, such as consolidation of flaking paint, for example, and to obtain the assistance of the rest of the team to ensure the swift completion of the restoration campaign.
