This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of youth literature as linguistic input material for the development of communicative competence and in-depth knowledge of the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries among Portuguese language students at Chinese universities. The study begins by analyzing the evolution of the role of literature in language teaching, identifying the fundamental role of literature in teaching a second language and identifying the linguistic, cultural, affective, and pedagogical challenges that classic literature can pose in the classes of beginner foreign language students. Then, through an analysis of existing studies, this dissertation analyzes the current dilemmas facing teaching Portuguese literature in Chinese universities in terms of three dimensions: curriculum organization, use of teaching materials, and teaching paradigm. On this basis, this study proposes an innovative approach to incorporating youth literary texts into teaching Portuguese literature in Chinese universities. It takes Bom dia, Camaradas as an example to design a corresponding teaching proposal. The study results show that the introduction of juvenile literary texts can be an effective didactic resource for undergraduate Portuguese teaching in China and promote students’ communicative competencies and an in-depth understanding of the cultures of Portuguese-speaking countries.
