No final dos anos 40 do século xx, Portugal vivia sob um regime ditatorial,
período durante o qual era visível a pobreza do país, quer ao nível financeiro, quer ao
nível cultural. Às mulheres era deixado o papel de boa mãe, esposa e dona de casa. Aos
homens, o papel de chefe de família e de dono de qualquer decisão feminina.
Foi neste contexto que se fez mulher, escritora, jornalista e editora Maria Lamas.
Num tempo em que a cultura e as letras eram tarefas alegadamente de homem, a
escritora foi contra tudo o que estava estabelecido e trabalhou como jornalista, assumiu
a direção do suplemento de jornal mais badalado da época, foi escritora de poesia, de
livros infantis e de romances, foi activista pelos direitos humanos e lutadora contra a
ditadura e pela igualdade de género. Escreveu e editou a maior reportagem sociológica
conhecida à época, sobre a temática da vida das mulheres portuguesas, As Mulheres do
Meu País. É sobre este seu papel que me proponho discorrer ao longo desta dissertação.
In the late 1940s, Portugal was under the dictatorial regime of Oliveira Salazar. It was a period during which the country's poverty was evident, both financially and culturally. Women were consigned to the role of dutiful mother, wife, and housekeeper. Men held the position of head of household and arbiter of all feminine decisions. It was in this context that Maria Lamas emerged as a woman, writer, journalist, and publisher. In an era when culture and letters were ostensibly the province of men, she defied all established conventions, working as a journalist and assuming the editorship of the most celebrated newspaper supplement of the time. She distinguished herself as a poet, children's author, and novelist, whilst also serving as a human rights activist and champion against dictatorship and for gender equality. She wrote and published what was then the most comprehensive sociological report on the lives of Portuguese women, entitled As Mulheres do Meu País (The women of my country). It is her role as the self-publisher of this seminal work that i propose to examine throughout this dissertation.
