ceticismo
This dissertation aims to investigate the news criteria that guided three news reports attributed to António de Sousa Macedo and published within the context of the Mercúrio Português periodical between 1663 and 1667. The three reports (Mercurio com as novas de Junho, Relacion Verdadera y Pontual, and Mercurio com as novas de Julho) address the Battle of Montes Claros, which took place on June 17, 1665. This battle is regarded as the last major armed conflict of the Portuguese Restoration War, in which Portugal and Spain clashed following the Restoration of Portuguese Independence in 1640. Through a discursive and content-based analysis that seeks a historical contextualization of this event and of the written production of the period, we aim to identify the early signs of a news ethics—an embryonic form of what would later develop into journalism, which at the time had not yet been formalized. This is due to the contextual specificity of this news production, where, in baroque fashion, divergent and seemingly contradictory criteria converged: truthfulness and propaganda; impartiality and diplomacy; religion and skepticism.
