progresso do mundo digital.
modernizar o conceito de BE, adaptando-a e inserindo-a no ambiente digital,
internacional.
This empirical study aims are to investigate and reflect on the information behavior of the digital native students in the field of literacy in the context of the school library activity (SL) of the EBI da Boa Água, in Quinta de Conde, through the analysis of their reading strategies and the way how information is retained and organized; ascertain whether the practice of the SL in relation to promotion and motivation for Media and Information Literacy (MIL) is adapted to the characteristics and information needs of the digital natives; verify if the infrastructure of the SL allows effective work and adequate development of the MIL; demonstrate the importance of the SL as a complement to formal and informal education. This study intends to be a contribution to the knowledge about the digital natives and their relationship with the SL. It also offers suggestions on how to improve and set a SL, still traditional, in the information society. To achieve the aims qualitative and quantitative research tools were applied: interviews with the librarian teacher of the EBI da Boa Água and the coordinating teacher of SL of the Boa ÁguaGroup of Schools; a survey applied to teachers and other to students; interview with some of the students who answered the questionnaire; applying a practical test in the SL, to test the research competencies of the students interviewed. The introduction defines the issues to be discussed, as well as their justification and importance; clarifies the working hypotheses, methodology and justification; also it points to the limitations of the work. Then, it proceeds with a literature review: the first chapter deals with the literacies and LIM in the information society, understood as the current social paradigm. It also analyzes some studies on the levels of reading literacy and media literacy in Portugal. Then it exposes different views on the concept of digital natives and what has changed in the reading competency as a result of the progress of the digital world. The third chapter addresses the issue of Public Policy School and Library, as well as the explanation of national and international studies on the SL and the digital natives. The next chapter proceeds with the empirical study on the SL of EBI da Boa Água, beginning with a historical note on the targeted school and a characterization of its SL. Later, it describes and analyzes the results obtained through the applied methodology, and in the final chapter there is the conclusion of the work. Through the literature review and the results obtained, it can be concluded that there is a long way to go not only in the field of MIL in the SL, but also in understanding the digital natives and what can be done to renew the education in general, in Portugal. Investment in training and public debate on the subject, both in politics and education, can change attitudes to modernize the concept of th SL, adapting and putting it into the digital environment, valuing it within its own school community, as well as in a national and even international level.
