This thesis examines the strategic implications of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the
semiconductor sector, with a focus on the integration of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a fabless
semiconductor company, and GlobalFoundries, a foundry. Set against the backdrop of intense
global competition, rapid innovation, and crucial global conflicts, the potential economic benefits
of a vertical integration is evaluated. It is also discussed whether the integration enhances AMD’s
supply chain resilience, operational flexibility, and innovation capacity while aligning
GlobalFoundries with evolving industry demands. The analysis encompasses pre- and post-merger
valuations, deal structure, synergy evaluation, and strategic implications.
