Este estudo centra-se em Adeodato Barreto, permitindo uma reflexão, a partir da abordagem da sua circunstância, sobre os quinhentos anos de permanência de Portugal em Goa, sobre as características do colonialismo português, da influência da Igreja Católica e da sua relação com o Hinduísmo, através das quais se procura perceber as peculiaridades da goanidade enquanto identidade goesa.
As complexidades da sociedade goesa revelam-se na sua literatura, que evolui de uma fase em que os autores são nativos goeses criados em meio católico e português, centrada numa temática religiosa católica para, na transição do século XIX para o século XX, aparecerem autores laicos que se centram nos problemas reais da sociedade goesa. Nesta altura, surgem personalidades como Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore e Sarojini Naidu que perfilham as teses do indianismo e da Independência da Índia, preocupações que se refletem também na sociedade goesa.
É neste contexto que o estudo procura compreender a personalidade complexa de Adeodato Barreto, na sua matriz cristã e hindu, onde o Ocidente e o Oriente se interpenetram. Foi um importante cultor da literatura goesa em língua portuguesa, na poética e na ensaística, grande divulgador da civilização Hindu em Portugal, onde desenvolveu relações epistolares com Rabindranath Tagore, Romain Rolland e Sylvain Lévi, ao mesmo tempo que desenvolve, em Coimbra e em Aljustrel, um intenso trabalho social e humanitário.
This research focuses on Adeodato Barreto, allowing a reflection, through the approach of his circumstance, about the five hundred years of Portuguese administration in Goa, the characteristics of Portuguese colonialism, the influence of the Catholic Church and their relationship with Hinduism, through which it demands to grasp the peculiarities of goanity as the Goan identity. The complexities of the Goan society are depicted in their literature, evolving from a phase in which authors are native Goans raised within Catholic and Portuguese settings, focused on a Catholic religious theme, to the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, when the works of secular authors focusing on the real problems of the Goan society come to light. At this time, personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Sarojini Naidu adopt the theses of Indianism and the Independence of India, concerns also reflected within the Goan society. It is within this context that this research seeks to understand the complexity of Adeodato Barreto’s personality, in his Christian and Hindu matrix, where the West and the East interpenetrate. He was a major promoter, not only of Goan literature in Portuguese language, both in the fields of poetry and essay, but also of the Hindu Civilization in Portugal, where he established epistolary relationships with Rabindranath Tagore, Romain Rolland and Sylvain Lévi. Simultaneously Barreto managed to accomplish an intense social and humanitarian work in Coimbra and Aljustrel.
