Sovietes?
The apprehension of soviet reality was tirelessly pursued throughout the 20th century. Various tools and analytical frameworks were mobilized around it. One of them, often disregarded: direct observation, informed by a biological device carried by most humans ā the eyes. This dissertation examines those who strapped their backpacks on and set off for the Soviet Union to see it as it truly was. It does so by focusing particularly on some Portuguese communist militants. Two main objectives guided this research. The first was the reconstruction of some of the journeys between Portugal and the Soviet Union during the 20th centuryāespecially those undertaken through the channels of the Portuguese Communist Party. The second was the identification and analysis of the travel narratives disseminated in the Portuguese context and those produced by individuals who, having left temporally Portugal, visited the USSR. This is, therefore, a dissertation that combines the study of communisms with the analysis of what is commonly referred to as travel literature. Ultimately, it seeks to answer the following question: what did Portuguese communists claim to have seen in the Land of the Soviets?
