Em Portugal, o estudo da cidadania em contexto escolar tem sido marcado por uma discussão em torno da melhor forma de transmitir aos jovens os valores que a sociedade lhes exige que saibam. A crise das sociedades, críticas à crise das escolas, discussão sobre os valores a transmitir e os temas a tratar; este trabalho faz um percurso sumário pela política educativa na área do estudo da cidadania, analisando os posicionamentos teóricos dominantes e comparando-os com os testemunhos de um conjunto de entrevistados. Estará a escola a cumprir o seu papel? Percorrendo a teoria e ouvindo os testemunhos, o esforço das escolas portuguesas em transmitir os valores cívicos, independentemente das dificuldades, parece efetivo, ainda que contraditório com aquilo que a sociedade exige e dos exemplos que dá. Defende-se a necessidade de um maior esforço e responsabilização dessa sociedade no apoio à instituição Escola.
In Portugal, the study of citizenship in schools has been marked by a discussion about the best way to provide young people de values that society requires them to know. The crisis of societies, the critics about the crisis of schools, the discussion about the values to be transmitted and the topics to be studied; this study is a summary route on the educational policy in the citizenship study area, analyzing the dominant theoretical positions and comparing them with the testimonies of a number of interviewees. Is the school to fulfill its role? Covering the theory and listening to the testimonies, the effort of Portuguese schools in transmitting civic values, regardless of the difficulties, it seems effective, although contradictory to what society demands and the examples that gives. Here is defended the need for greater effort and responsibility from society in supporting the school institution.
