entre humano, tecnologia e imagem (Hayles, 1990; Jurgenson, 2020; Mitchell & Hansen, 2010;
This study aims to analyze the characteristics of digital images in our time, comparing theories about new technologies and digital culture with the daily practices of ordinary users. To this end, the study involved monitoring visual content shared by a group of Brazilian immigrants on the social media Instagram and WhatsApp, where the images combine document qualities and interactive functions in cyberspace. During the conduct of a digital ethnography, which included collecting shared images and interviews, the particularities of visual communication on each platform were analyzed within the context of the current technologically connected migratory experience (Appadurai, 1996; Diminescu, 2008), based on reflections by scholars on the relationship between human, technology and image (Hayles, 1990; Jurgenson, 2020; Mitchell & Hansen, 2010; Sturken, 2017) and the concepts of contemporary digital discourse (Paveau, 2021). Finally, the results are analyzed on three fronts: whether the images function as memory records or acts of socialization; whether there are distinct strategies within the different types of formats on the platforms; and whether there is a search for being present from a distance through the images, establishing technologically mediated routines of intimacy. Therefore, the objective is to offer a broad theoretical contextualization of studies related to the theme and situate them in research supported by qualitative and quantitative data from the field study.
