Resumo(s)
This paper explores the relationship between bachelors’ fields of study and the gender
wage gap in Portugal. Results suggest that the STEM fields give relatively large returns and
indicate a 14 percent reduction in the estimated gender wage gap once fields of study are
considered. Gender differences in returns to fields are statistically significant and generate
different gender gaps among bachelors of various fields. Firm sorting explains part of the
gender gap among bachelors in some fields. There is some evidence of selection bias in
gender wage gaps estimates as individuals self-select into their degrees.
