Os Portugueses na Austrália: uma análise a partir do estágio no Observatório da Emigração

Este relatório apresenta os resultados do estágio realizado no Observatório da Emigração, entre outubro de 2023 e março de 2024. Analisa-se o fenómeno da emigração portuguesa na Austrália, um dos principais destinos de emigração portuguesa, com recurso a métodos quantitativos e, em menor grau, a métodos qualitativos. Estes permitem um estudo detalhado das principais características da emigração portuguesa na Austrália, através de dados estatísticos reunidos em dois documentos, o Country Report e o Fact Sheet. Neste último, são analisadas as práticas transnacionais dos portugueses na Austrália, através da aplicação de um inquérito por questionário. Ambos os documentos são publicações regulares do Observatório da Emigração. Para enquadrar os dados, considerou-se oportuno proceder à contextualização bidirecional do fenómeno emigratório: primeiro, do estado emissor, Portugal, procedendo a uma caracterização histórica e contemporânea do fenómeno migratório, assim como das estruturas (formais e informais) que agem como bases do transnacionalismo migrante; em seguida contextualiza-se a Austrália como país recetor de imigração, cuja abordagem à migração e à diversidade assenta numa política multicultural, favorável ao exercício de práticas transnacionais. Explorados os resultados, constata-se que o recurso a práticas transnacionais não é uma característica proeminente dos portugueses na Austrália. Assim, estamos perante um transnacionalismo de baixa intensidade, dependente dos laços emocionais e afetivos que ligam os migrantes à origem. Tal é indicativo de um transnacionalismo predominantemente simbólico.
This report presents the internship results at the Emigration Observatory, between October 2023 and March 2024. The phenomenon of Portuguese emigration in Australia, one of the main destinations for Portuguese emigration, is analyzed using quantitative methods and, to a lesser extent, qualitative methods. These allow a detailed study of the main characteristics of Portuguese emigration in Australia, through statistical data gathered in two documents, the Country Report and the Fact Sheet. In the latter, the transnational practices of Brazilians in Australia are analysed, through the application of a questionnaire survey. Both documents are regular publications of the Emigration Observatory. To frame the data, it was considered reasonable to proceed with a bidirectional contextualization of the emigration phenomenon: first, of the issuing state, Portugal, proceeding with a historical and contemporary characterization of the migratory phenomenon, as well as the structures (formal and informal) that act as bases for the emigration phenomenon of migrant transnationalism; Australia is then contextualized as a country receiving immigration, whose approach to migration and diversity is based on a multicultural policy, favourable to the exercise of transnational practices. After exploring the results, it appears that the use of transnational practices is not a prominent characteristic of the Portuguese in Australia. Thus, we are facing a low-intensity transnationalism, dependent on the emotional and affective ties that link migrants to their origin. This is indicative of a predominantly symbolic transnationalism.
