This thesis is a comprehensive exploration of the imperative to enhance ocean health, aligned
with the United Nationās Sustainable Development Goal 14, which advocates for the
sustainable utilization of oceans, seas, and marine resources. Rooted in the emerging concept
of the Blue Economy (BE), the thesis underscores the BE's commitment to achieving economic
growth while safeguarding a robust ocean ecosystem. It builds on prior literature recognizing
the pivotal role played by sustainable entrepreneurs in fostering innovation, nature preservation,
and livelihood support. The study focuses specifically on the recent emergence of blue
entrepreneurship, addressing marine environmental challenges through entrepreneurial
activities. Delving into the Portuguese entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) and blue startups, the
research employs a qualitative approach with 16 interviews involving industry, startup, and
investor experts. Key insights emerge, highlighting the significance of entrepreneurial
education for marine scientists, fostering collaboration between science and business students,
and establishing a supportive regulatory framework. Ultimately, this thesis makes a substantial
contribution by analyzing existing barriers and opportunities in the Portuguese Blue Economy,
providing actionable guidelines for blue entrepreneurs.
