A presente dissertação pretende demonstrar a maneira como a obra de ficção
especulativa e distópica, Tell Me an Ending (2022), de Jo Harkin, se relaciona com os estudos
de identidade, os estudos de memória, os estudos sobre a alimentação e o modo como estão
representadas as doenças mentais. Desta forma, procura dar um contexto teórico sobre estas
áreas do conhecimento no primeiro capítulo.
Neste é abordado a utopia e os estudos de memória, a representação das doenças
mentais e os estudos sobre a alimentação na literatura utópica. A identidade e os estudos de
identidade são abordados no subcapítulo da análise de Tell Me an Ending, intitulado “A
questão da identidade”. Outro aspeto abordado nesta análise é o papel da ciência.
No segundo capítulo, são analisadas duas outras obras, Remember Me (2022), de
Estelle Laure, e The Program (2013), de Suzanne Young, para que seja possível analisar a
relação existente entre elas e Tell Me an Ending.
Por último, a conclusão visa salientar os vários aspetos abordados nesta dissertação e
a sua relevância nos estudos literários e culturais.
This dissertation aims to demonstrate the way in which the dystopian work of speculative fiction, Tell Me an Ending (2022), written by Jo Harkin, relates to identity studies, memory studies, food studies, and how mental illness is represented in it. To accomplish this, it provides a theoretical background about these fields of knowledge in the first chapter. This theoretical background discusses utopianism and memory studies, the representation of mental illness and food studies in utopian literature. The identity and identity studies are addressed in the subchapter of Tell Me an Ending’s analysis. Another aspect discussed in this analysis is the importance of science in the book. In the second chapter of this dissertation, two books are analysed, Remember Me (2022), by Estelle Laure, and The Program (2013), by Suzanne Young, so that we can analyse their relationship with the work of fiction chosen as the primary source, Tell Me an Ending. Lastly, the conclusion aims to bring forward the most important aspects of this dissertation and their relevance to literary and cultural studies.
