This dissertation investigates the tension between the concepts of Human Rights and Sovereignty according to an English School approach of International Relations Theory in the way in which the EU acted during the 2015 migration crisis, whether in the reception of refugees, in the mechanisms created and adopted; as well as in the management of its borders. By investigating the English School's two perspectives of International Society (pluralist and solidarist society), we were able to see that the EU's responses reveal clear disparities between asylum policies and the security of its borders, affecting both the bloc's integration and stability as well as the integrity of the humanitarian values it defends. We concluded that, in a crisis of this magnitude, the European Union prioritised the maintenance of internal order and security over the rights of the refugees arriving daily on its territory.
