Resumo(s)
This study explores the influence of personal aspirations, expectations, and non-cognitive
skills on the educational trajectories of 9th grade students in over 200 disadvantaged schools
across Portugal. Employing OLS regressions, the research assesses the role of each one of
these dimensions in shaping their preferences towards vocational or academic high school
paths, including specific specialization.
The findings reveal a significant correlation between personal aspirations, expectations, and
non-cognitive skills and students' educational choices with aspirations and expectations
playing a significant role in vocational selections. This underscores the critical importance of
considering these factors in understanding and supporting the educational choices of students
from disadvantaged backgrounds ultimately aiming to enhance their educational outcomes.
