Over the past fifty years, commodity trading houses have adapted their business models in order
to remain resilient and flexible in the face of major global shifts, unlike FMCG trading houses.
This research paper details the unique threats facing FMCG trading practices and uncovers
whether and how the transformation of commodity trading houses’ business models can provide
inspiration to FMCG traders. FMCG traders face varied challenges in today’s global landscape.
Commodity trading practices can provide inspiration in their adoption of vertical integration. By
drawing on qualitative data from industry professionals, this paper attempts to unveil the secrecy
surrounding FMCG trading operations to provide valuable insights for those within and
surrounding the industry.
